If you want to learn more about a website, all you have to do is go and look up its Whois record. You can do that by using DomainTools' Whois Lookup website or DomainTool's ProjectWHOIS desktop application. Just enter a website’s domain or IP address into ProjectWHOIS, hit the GO button, and wait for your browser to launch and load the website’s Whois record. Using ProjectWHOIS really is that simple.

The ProjectWHOIS setup wizard will guide you through all the steps you need to take to install this application on your desktop computer. Once the installation completes, the setup wizard will ask you if you want to install the ProjectWHOIS extension for Firefox. I actually wanted to install the extension, but Firefox said that it’s an unverified extension and blocked the installation.

ProjectWHOIS quietly sits in the tray while you go about your day. If you need to access a website’s Whois record, you can right click the tray icon and select Whois Lookup from the context menu. Or, better yet, you can just double click the tray icon and the Whois Lookup window will show up. Type in the website’s domain or IP address, hit the GO button, and your browser will launch and display the website’s Whois record.

If you don’t want to use the ProjectWHOIS desktop application, you don’t have to. Since the desktop application uses the Whois Lookup website to displays a website’s Whois record in your browser, you could do away with the middleman and use the Whois Lookup website directly.

ProjectWHOIS is free software.

ProjectWHOIS makes it very easy to look up information about a website and access its Whois record.

Pros

A setup wizard will help you install ProjectWHOIS on your desktop computer. You can easily access a website’s Whois record by typing in the website’s domain or IP address. ProjectWHOIS is free software. By using the ProjectWHOIS desktop application you're helping DomainTools search for Whois records.

Cons

Firefox blocked the ProjectWHOIS extension, saying that it isn’t verified. Closing ProjectWHOIS is unnecessarily difficult: right click the tray icon -> select About/Exit -> click on Exit -> confirm that you actually want to exit. You don’t really need the ProjectWHOIS desktop application because you can use the Whois Lookup website instead.
